In my garden, situated just 20 miles from the chilly north sea on the east coast of England I am trying to create a small exotic oasis, something reminiscent of a jungle clearing. An area to sit on a sunny day and be a million miles away, but also a garden that can withstand the icy blast of winter !

The word mad springs to mind, but with the right plants and a small amount of winter protection, you too could be sitting in your own urban jungle. Foliage is the key to unlocking your very own paradise, big bold leaves in varying shades of green, supplemented with exotic looking flowers, suddenly your garden is transported much nearer to the equator. Palms, banana's and tree ferns can all be successfully grown in a cool climate and the mood they lend to the garden is simply stunning.

On the following pages you will find a record of how my garden is progressing, the successes and the failures. I try to update these pages at the end of summer and winter.
